All Smiles…

All Smiles “Ten Readings of A Warning” (Dangerbird)

Buy it at Insound!

All Smiles is the brainchild of Jim Fairchild. While that name may not ring a bell it certainly should. Fairchild was an intergral part of the great Granddady during their many years together. His solo debut record as All Smiles has an impressive cast of characters helping out. Janet Weiss (Sleater Kinney, Quasi), Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Black Heart Procession, Magic Magicians), Danny Seim (Lack Thereof, Menomena), and Solon Bixler (Great Northern) all make appearances on Ten Readings of A Warning. Much like his Dangerbird labelmate, Sea Wolf, All Smiles is mining the same indie-pop territory. While not as instantly catchy as Sea Wolf, Fairchild and All Smiles have crafted an album that grows and reveals more with each listen. Fairchild keeps All Smiles on a more intimate level though. The majority of Ten Readings of A Warning was recorded on 8-track and that shows in the cozy and personal atmosphere the album exudes. Fairchild’s songwriting still shines quite brightly across the album’s eleven tracks. Ten Readings of A Warning is an album that promises more for the future than it necessarily reveals in the present. Fairchild is a singer/songwriter to keep in touch with.
