The Rosebuds…

The Rosebuds “Night Of The Furies” (Merge)

The Rosebuds have come an awful long way in a relatively short time. It’s hard to believe this is the same band that belted out care-free pop song with gleeful abandon on their debut, The Rosebuds Make Out. Their second album, Birds Make Good Neighbors was a mature indie pop record well beyond the group’s years. As good as their second record was it caused a noticeable split in the band’s fanbase. The Rosebuds third record, Night Of The Furies, just might rectify that split.

Night Of The Furies is a worthy combinationof the band’s first two albums. The Rosebuds strike a wonderful balance on this record. Fans of the band’s simple pop songcraft will find a lot to like here as the band lets loose for several unabashed pop songs. Equally, other fans of the mature sounds the band displayed on Birds Make Good Neighbors will be pleased with what they hear as well. The Rosebuds still expertly create their songs around the shared male/female vocals. The band’s lyrics have definitely taken a darker bent as they have grown older. The lyrical backdrop of the band is certainly an interesting contrast against the band’s often dancey disco indie pop.

The Rosebuds have hit on that unique balance between art and pop accessibility. The band continues to grow and mature into one of my favorite bands with each passing album. I have seen the band twice and each time I left thoroughly impressed. As good as each of their albums are, they simply can not hold a candle to the fun, manic energy this band displays on stage. Let’s hope this duo keep it going in the studio and on stage for many years to come.
