Frank Turner…

Frank Turner “Sleep Is For The Week” (Xtra Mile)

I will have to plead ignorance to the lineage of Frank Turner. He was the front man for the UK punk band Million Dead who I am unfamiliar with. Sleep Is For The Week is Turner’s debut solo full-length album and it is impressive. Turner’s solo output is not your typical singer/songwriter project. Turner does not feel the need to hit you over the head with sentimentality. There is a punk and vagabound spirit that runs throughout the album as well as a subtle humor. His vocals bare a striking resemblance to The Decemberists‘ Colin Meloy on several occasions. However, where Meloy wraps his melodies in a certain pretense, Turner’s lyrics ring out with a simplistic and touching honesty that is sorely missed in the singer/songwriter realm. The album goes back and forth from subtle songs to more upbeat tracks. Turner delves into an assortment of subjects on Sleep Is For The Week but he always comes off as completely genuine. Frank Turner may just be starting out on the solo tip but the future looks nothing but bright for him.
