Robbers On High Street…

Robbers On High Street “The Fatalist And Friends” (Scratchie/New Line)

(Digital EP available via Itunes)

The Fatalist And Friends is a digital teaser EP in promotion of Robbers On High Street’s forthcoming 2007 album Grand Animals. The EP contains two tracks from Grand Animals, an exclusive track and a cover of Paul McCartney’s “Monkberry Moon Delight.” This is my first exposure to Robbers On High Street. I had always heard the band was a Spoon clone and wow, it seems to be true. I must admit, the similarities here are fairly striking upon my first listen. It’s not just that the music sounds like Spoon but the vocals do as well. Robbers On High Street front man Ben Trokan’s vocals are a definite match to the patented wails of Spoon’s Britt Daniels. Trokan even has the tendency of going falsetto much like Daniels does at times. None of this is to say that Robbers On High Street are bad though…it is actually quite the contary. All four songs here are toe-tapping slices of danceable indie rock. The only problem is in the originality department. If you can get past the lack of it, well, Robbers On High Street are a joyful listen. However, until the band finds their own true original sound, I am afraid they will always be left to wallow in the shadows of Spoon.
