What is it about Sweden that produces such great pop music? Somebody should do a study to find stuff like this out. Peter, Bjorn and John add to the list of great pop bands that have come out of Sweden. The trio have been around since 1999 and Writer’s Block is their third full-length album. So, they are not at all newcomers to the scene. In fact, Björn (Yttling) has produced records for The Concretes and Shout Out Louds.

“Objects Of My Affection” is an emotionally wrenching song that starts off the album on a high note. And Writer’s Block rarely lets up after that. “Young Folks” adds the sexy vocals of Victoria Bergsman from The Concretes and is the obvious single on Writer’s Block. The catchy “Amsterdam” adds a little fun to the record. “Start To Melt” is huge sounding, yet, warm and inviting at the same time. The seven minute “Up Against The Wall” provides a nice centerpiece even if it does mess with the flow of the record a slight bit. However, the band jumps right back in with “Paris 2004” which is a wonderfully bouncy pop song that manages to stay grounded. “Let’s Call It Off” has a mod feel to it while “The Chills” is a elegantly dark pop song. Many of the songs on “Writer’s Block” remind me of the depth of pop songcraft that someone like Ted Leo reached on his fabulous The Tyranny Of Distance album. It’s intricate, diverse and intelligent while all the while remaining remarkably accessible.

One thing becomes strikingly apparent when listening to Writer’s Block. This trio can write some damn fine pop songs…no matter what version of pop the trio chooses to play. There is not a bad song here to dwell on. Quite simply, Peter Bjorn And John have found themselves at the forefront of creating emotional and intelligent pop.
