mewithoutYou “Brother, Sister” (Tooth And Nail)

Buy it at Insound!

There is something inherently spiritual about mewithoutYou’s music. I remember thinking this when I first listened to the band years ago before I even knew of the group’s Christian beliefs. Sadly many people in the indie scene won’t give the group a chance because of the group’s religious affiliations. It’s too bad cause mewithoutYou are making boldly intelligent music that, while certainly showing their spirituality, should be admired and enjoyed by Christians and non-Christians alike.

The lyrics of mewithoutYou touch on the brutal honesty of someone like David Bazan of Pedro The Lion. Both offer a unique look into the constant struggle that Christians have with their beliefs and how their faith is often compromised. It’s a dirty look into the realities of religion that is surely never seen in your commercially based Christian music. mewithoutYou have toured with a diverse group of bands and it is easy to see why. The band’s music has touchstones from indie to prog to emo to hardcore. Through it all are the vocals of Aaron Weiss. He has an unusual style which finds him speaking and shouting a lot of his lyrics rather than actually singing. It’s something that certainly takes some patience to become accustomed to but in the end it certainly is worth it.

This is the band’s third album and it continues their constant evolution into a force to be reckoned with in the indie scene. It has become apparent the stature of the band has grown exponentially over the last few years. Especially when you realize that Jeremy Enigk of Sunny Day Real Estate fame is singing at the end of “O, Porcupine” (word is Enigk actually approached the band and asked if he could be on the record in some capacity). If that’s not praise enough I’m not sure what is. Either way, mewithoutYou have stretched out beyond their beliefs on Brother, Sister.
