Weatherbox “The Clearing” (Doghouse)

This is a release that has caught me completely off guard. Doghouse, a label I grew up with that went completely down the toilet, has actually released something good. San Diego’s Weatherbox play distinctive post-hardcore very akin to Saddle Creek’s Criteria. In fact the Weatherbox vocalist is a dead ringer for Stephen Pederson of Criteria at times. But, there are subtle differences here and there that help Weatherbox stand out from being just another clone though. For a debut, the band has an incredibly mature approach to songwriting. These five songs encompass an impressive mixture of different tempos, moods and textures. The band can go from a an all out rock song to a moody downtempo number in the drop of a hat. The Clearing is a fanstastic debut EP and Weatherbox is most certainly a band to watch out for in the near future.
