Six Organs Of Admittance…

Six Organs Of Admittance “Sun Awakens” (Drag City)

Sometimes I feel so out of touch with my indie rock-ness. Six Organs Of Admittance is a name I have heard a ton over the last few years but this is my very first exposure to the band. Sun Awakens is the eight outing by the band. Led by front man Ben Chasny, who is also a member of the rock outfit Comets On Fire, Six Organs plays a wonderful mixture of new and old. It’s like indie rock colliding with classic rock. At the forefront are Chasny’s soul searching vocals and his inventive guitar playing. Chasny brings to mind a rougher, less “heart on sleeve” version of Elliott Smith at times. The album moves back and forth between vocal numbers and instrumental pieces rather comfortably. The album ends on an epic note with the sprawling 23 minute “River Of Transfiguration” which displays all parts of Six Organs in every drony way possible. The song creates a beautiful atmosphere if you allow yourself to soak it all in which is easier said than done. It’s an interesting choice of Chasny to include this piece on Sun Awakens. It doesn’t really fit the mood or tone of the album’s previous six tracks. What it does create is a sense of wonder and curiousness as to what Six Organs next album might just sound like.

RIYL: Elliott Smith, John Fahey, Devendra Banhart
