Oxford Collapse…

Oxford Collapse “Remember The Night Parties” (Sub Pop)

Buy it at Insound!

You really have to tip your hat to Sub Pop. Who would think the label would sign a band like this in 2006? Oxford Collapse play beautifully familiar sounding post-punk akin to genre legends like Sonic Youth, Wire and Mission Of Burma. There is also a Chapel Hill sound to the band’s post-punk that echoes that town’s past prominent bands like Archers Of Loaf and Superchunk. At other times, on the band’s more accessible material the ghost of 80’s era REM appears. This is the Brooklyn, NY band’s third album and it is quite an impressive affair.

The production of veteran indie producer John Agnello (Jawbox, Chavez, Dinosaur Jr.) seems to be the perfect fit for the band’s sound. “He’ll Paint While We Play” starts things off rather solemnly as it is slower paced then most of the album. “Please Visit Your National Parks” picks up the pace and it is apparent why this is the album’s first single. On the 8-minute “Return Of The Burno” the band expands in glorious directions while it shows off its quirky and experimental nature. The band never seems to take itself too serious so it’s a perfect example that “Lady Lawyers” follows up the band’s most ambitious track. It’s a infectious slice of guitar pop that is addictive in its playful delivery. “Kenny Can’t Afford” is highlighted by a beautiful horn line and the lyrically biting “Molasses” has a recorder prominent throughout and remarkably it sounds just right. It is the small touches like those which make Oxford Collapse stand out just a little more than most bands playing this style.

Oxford Collapse seems to be reaching beyond the walls of the genre that has influenced them so greatly and that’s what makes Remember The Night Parties sound so fresh. If you are already a fan of this genre, this is one that definitely needs to go on the shopping list. Even if you are not a fan of this genre I suggest you check this band out. Oxford Collapse are evolving into something special right before our eyes and it would be a shame for anyone to miss that just because of some preconceived genre prejudices.
