Hunger Anthem…

Hunger Anthem “Hunger Anthem” (Broken Brain)

BUY HERE!

I get my fair share of below average stuff in the mail. So, it is always nice to receive something to review that is actually good. This is a strong effort here by Buffalo’s Hunger Anthem. Hunger Anthem is the brainchild of Brendan Vaganek. Hunger Anthem’s music is wonderful garage pop recorded stictly on 4-track. The DIY lo-fi indie rock/power pop of Hunger Anthem is definitely in the vein of early Guided By Voices at times. The lo-fi aspect is certainly no gimmick though. The songwriting here is quite impressive and tends to remind me of the strong melodic nature of bands like Sugar and Superdrag.

There are a number of great tracks on Hunger Anthem. Maybe it’s just me, but I think the true beauty of Hunger Anthem comes out when the fuzz is turned down a bit. Songs like “Underatted Silence”, “Mantle Matches”, “November” and album closer “Erase” are beautifully simple pop gems. That’s not to say that Hunger Anthem can’t create some great songs that rock though. “Color” is a phenomenal track and my personal favorite here. It sounds like a long lost Bob Mould (Sugar, Husker Du) classic. Album opener “A Special Undoing” is a song that Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices) wishes was in his songbook. Hunger Anthem’s tempo flows back and forth from song to song but that only adds to the listening experience.

There is not much more to be said here. This is exactly the reason why sound.as.language. was started. I wanted to discover great music that I might not have otherwise found. Then I wanted to spread the word about that music. Brendan and Hunger Anthem have created some great underground pop music here. It is music that he has crafted on his terms and his terms alone. Kudos to him and others like him out there.
