One beautiful thing about the split format is the chance of discovering a band that otherwise you might have never found. I’ve been a fan of Kind Of Like Spitting for a long time now and that’s the main reason I picked up this split LP. The fact that Lemuria, a band I had never heard of before, steals the show is a pleasant surprise to say the least.
Lemuria play a brand of indie pop-punk that really takes me back in time to one of my favorite bands, Discount (RIP). The amazing female vocals of Discount are echoed with Sheena Ozzela’s performance here. The band writes ridiculously catchy songs that touch on the bitterness of life and relationships. The intertwining vocals of Ozzela and drummer (yes, drummer) Alex Kerns are beautifully done. Kerns takes the lead vocals on the second track, “Lick Your Lips” and the results are absolutely intoxicating. These songs are downright addictive and Lemuria has become one of my new favorite bands!
Kind Of Like Spitting contribute five songs to the split. It’s more of the same from Ben Barnett and his band. That’s a good thing as Barnett does his usual rotation between the more rocking band-oriented songs to his bare folk songs. Barnett is well known for his emotionally vulnerable lyrics. There’s a certain “emo” undercurrent in all his music. But, it’s earnest and heartfelt and done in a manner that is completely endearing.
Kind Of Like Spitting’s side of the split is strong like much of Barnett’s material is. However, it just does not touch the heights of his better material. On the other hand Lemuria’s side of the split is an outstanding set of songs and one can not help but wish the band would have wrote a few more songs and made this their debut full-length. It would have made for an amazing record and one I’m sure would have been in my best of year end list.
