Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan…

Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan "Ballad Of The Broken Seas" (V2)

It's a beautiful thing when two unique artists come together to create music and everything seems to click. That's exactly what what happens for Isobel Campbell (formerly of Belle And Sebastian) and Mark Lanegan (formerly of Screaming Trees and current member of Queens Of The Stone Age) on Ballad Of The Broken Seas.

The combination of Campbell's delicately pretty vocals with Lanegan's whiskey coated baritone is certainly impressive. The duo wastes little time showing you that on album opener "Deus Ibi Est" as well as the third track "The False Husband." The duo's cover of Hank Williams' "Ramblin' Man" actually does the original justice. Lanegan goes solo rather well on the outstanding album closer "The Circus Is Leaving Town." One hopes the duo will continue to make music together that highlights both of their distinct talents.

Ballad Of The Broken Seas is not an album that is going to blow you away. It seems to loose some steam on its second half. However, for people who like to wallow in their own misery, as both Campbell and Lanegan seem to revel in, they will find something to love here. Ballad Of The Broken Seas is a perfect late night drinking record. And that's a hell of a compliment in my book.
