Tortoise & Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy…

Tortoise & Bonnie 'Prince' Billy "The Brave And The Bold" (Overcoat)

The Brave And The Bold is an interesting cover album by two of indie rock's most prominent names. What's more interesting is the diverse cast of artists that Will Oldham (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) and Tortoise have chosen to cover here. From Bruce Springsteen to Devo to The Minutemen to Lungfish, the list of songs is quite impressive. The expectations from fans for this album was surely very high. Perhaps that is where The Brave And The Bold falters though.

This is one of those albums that can certainly be chalked up to what the listener's expectations might have been going in. If, like me, you were expecting something a bit more eclectic from The Brave And The Bold then you very well could be disappointed in the outcome. Other than a few nice touches here and there, the album stays fairly true to the originals. It makes for a nice listen but it also makes it a rather boring one too. It certainly does not come close to surpassing Tortoise or Oldham's other material. It's recommended that you bring your expectations down a bit and realize that Tortoise and Oldham probably just got together and knocked this album out for fun. I think that will certainly increase your chances for enjoyment.
