The Velvet Teen…

The Velvet Teen "Gyzmkid EP" (Slowdance)

This is a brief three song EP that precludes The Velvet Teen's upcoming full length, Cum Laude. If this EP is any indication, The Velvet Teen are truly moving their sound into an exciting new direction. The first song, "Gyzmkid", is the title track as well as the first single off the new album. It is a fantastic song that is bathed in electronics quite similar to something off of Kid A-era Radiohead. The vocals of Judah Nagler for the first time reach the fevered heights of Jeremy Enigk's (of Sunny Day Real Estate) highest pitched notes. The next two tracks are exclusive to the EP. The second track is a remix of "Spin The Wink", a track on Cum Laude. It sounds like The Velvet Teen going Postal Service. It's interesting but hopefully the original version will outshine this remix. The third track is a beautiful acoustic version of "False Profits", yet another track on Cum Laude as well. As in the past, Nagler's vocals certainly recall Jeff Buckley here. There are some nice female background vocals that really add to the song as well. I'm interested to see how the original version stacks up cause the acoustic version is downright gorgeous. While there's not a whole lot to sink your teeth into on this EP, it sure does the job of wetting your appetite for The Velvet Teen's upcoming album. I'm assuming that was the point.

RIYL: Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Sunny Day Real Estate
