Mugison "Mugimama, Is This Monkey Music?" (Ipecac)

Mugison is some weird old sailor dude from Iceland who makes some beautifully odd music. Supposedly he is pretty huge in his home country. I first heard Mugison while working at a record company earlier this year. We were sent this record but he eventually signed with Mike Patton's Ipecac Records in the US. I'm not sure if I have ever been so confounded by a record. If you can't deal with genre jumping on records then you should choose to stay far away from this one. Some songs are flat out beautiful in the vein of Bonnie 'Prince' Billy with lovely female backing vocals. Unfortunately, too many times these songs are broken up by tracks of electronic noise, annoying vocals and downright silly lyrics about chickens and trucks. I will say that the songs that are good…are really good. I always find records like this really frustrating. In the end though, it's an interesting and, for the most part, rewarding listen.

RIYL: Tom Waits, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Beck
